  1. 10 years ago had I looked into a crystal ball, I might have chosen differently. However, because I had wonderful teachers & resources where I ended up, I am forever grateful. I got an education in life that I would not trade for the world, I am a strong resilient & brave woman today because I traveled that road. I am forever grateful to the Tennessee Department of Corrections.

  2. 10 years ago I was 31, so I had gone through a lot of my educational years all ready. But I was at a point in life where I thought I had it all figured out. I was wrong. 10 years later I feel like I know less than I did before but that’s not true. I just know what I don’t know now.

  3. Ten years ago, I was two days shy of giving birth to my second (now middle) child. I was at journeyman level at work and filling in the blocks and credentials toward my next promotion. I was also preparing for some maternity leave and a part-time schedule. It was planning for the future, but taking a break to acknowledge the new little whirlwind that was about to enter our lives.

After being part-time for a while, I interviewed and got my promotion to go back full time. Time to prioritize my career. And then I got pregnant again (unexpectedly). Sometimes life can be your greatest teacher. My third child threw my entire life for a loop. He’s also been my most challenging 🙂 But there are no words for how much I love that boy and just how much bigger my heart has grown for being his mother.

The kids are 12, 10 and 7 and I am still waiting for my next career “level up.” Much longer than I expected, but my life- thanks to all of my “life teachers” is rich, balanced and complicated.

  4. For me, I would have to say, I am more compassionate, giving, understanding and kinder because of my education all those years ago. My school was rather old fashioned Catholic school. We were treated with more discipline than education (if you understand what I am getting at).

  5. Ten years ago I was taking care of my dying mother and my grandmother. I received a rough education in life and death. I’ve since gone on to get my degree and work in a field I only dreamed of. Sadly, my mom’s death was the catalyst for where I am today and as much as I miss her I’m grateful for where it led me.

  6. Oh my goodness where do I start? They showed me how beautiful and complex and awe-inspiring this creation is. I saw their humility and love and service and it has made me want to inspire others

  7. school was a troublesome time for me, as teachers blamed me for being bullied by others, and getting the work done on time was easier said than done. i couldnt cope with not being able to understand the lessons because even the teachers made me feel stupid for getting the answer even partly correct! i still kinda dread school. would love to go back to get my GED but i cant afford that. sadly there isnt any free online courses either for canadians.

  8. Ten years ago I was running a high school behavior program. Most of my students had multiple mental health issues (schizophrenia, bi-polar, on the autism spectrum, severe depression, severe ADHD/ADD.) The classes/teachers around mental health were just as relevant as education classes. It was a really big job: I had loads of preps in all the core subjects, plus I did anger management, social skills and art therapy. I also worked with probation officers and mental health counselors that were attached to my students. That meant tons of meetings. I did a lot of caring for others, but didn’t do very good with myself. I think learning about mindfulness and mediation was most personally transforming to/for me. And learning about self-compassion. I can care for others better if/when I care for myself. I used to think it was selfish to think about myself. Now I think it’s smart.

  9. Oh man. 10 years ago I was in a completely different place. A black hole if you will. And it took like what felt like 9 years to be aware of it. I will forever be grateful for all of the incredible teachers that have entered into my life. Some I know well, some I am just getting to know, some I have never met. Being open and truly listening has completely transformed my life. I have always been an avid learner, but the lessons just seem to be settling on a deeper level as of late.
