Blue Zone Inspiration
🌎 BLUE ZONE INSPIRATION

Happiness is a common thread in the Blue Zones. These long-lived communities nurture environments and cultures that promote positive behaviors and improve life satisfaction.

When the Blue Zone study extended its research from health to happiness, it found that people are significantly happier when they perceive life as long and easy than those who see it as short and hard. This positive perception correlates with greater happiness, generosity, and civic engagement.

  1. A year or two ago I wasn’t able to stop mysterious anxiety and food compulsion. Although at times I still don’t, many other times I just smile at myself, talk to what I’m sad about and what I can do to look after myself. Sometimes this completely changes the situation. I’m also more able to look at my vulnerability with humour. I’m proud of myself for these small changes and for therefore seeing life more lightly.

  2. What might be a small thing to someone else loomed large for me. Last month, my miscommunication caused tension with my very nice neighbour. Guilty anxiety filled me; when he ignored my texted apologies, I felt terrible. Even had a panic attack, a rarity for me. Bad winter weather helped me to “hide out,” so I worked to ‘lighten up’ through self-compassion practices, including mindful smiling. On a sunny day, hearing him working outside, I was able to approach him with sincere warmth. The conflict never even showed up, as he met me with equal friendliness. ‘Phffffft!’ — the clouds between us vanished. Relief and joy, yes! I re-learned how to evoke inner courage to face my misdeeds, patiently calm myself, and await a chance to make amends with minimal fuss.

  3. I’m just coming off of an intensive 3 day session for my MBA. Well, the whole month has been intense to be completely honest. I am NOT a fan of public speaking. I will do it when forced, but it is not something I enjoy. A limited number of volunteers were given a crisis scenario, and then 30 seconds to prepare and present to group. I initially thought I would be able to avoid, but I knew that I needed to stretch myself. So I volunteered. My professor deliberately gave me a hard scenario (a death of an employee). The best part about it though wasn’t the praise I got afterwords, it was the silent encouragement of everyone in the room, it was a friend telling me afterwards that she grew from the fact that I pushed myself. It was having the head of leadership and development walk by in the hallway moments before I was supposed to go in and give me an infinite amount of support by literally just placing her hands on my back and looking me in the eyes and telling me I was going to do great. I was so terrified to actually do it, but then afterwords so incredibly proud of myself for making that leap. Every time something like this happens, it just encourages me to leap for more.

    • What a superb experience, Maria — congratulations on this rich turning point. I can easily imagine you encouraging others in the future just as you were supported in creating this wonderful outcome for yourself. (I relate closely, having travelled a similar path fifty years ago: as a painfully shy young adult, I accepted a teaching position. Over the first two years, I learned to LOVE teaching/speaking, thank goodness, and eventually taught it too. Seems to me you’re ‘catching the bug’ of this pleasure!)

  4. I cleaned and organized my home office. I was able to donate and recycle a lot of things that I just wasn’t using any longer. The office feels welcoming and happy now. In fact, everything else in the house feels more organized even though the office was the only room I did anything in. 🙂

  5. I have not been in the best situation at work for a while. Things have gotten more difficult last week and I wanted to walk out. However I also know I need another job before I leave this one so I put a smile on my face and I workedcwith the people that have been making it difficult to be here. Knowing I did the small act, knowing that I smiled, they truly did not know what to do. I will continue to be happy and I will continue to know that no one can hurt me unless I allow it, I will not.

  6. I had a birthday on the 19th and I was a little disappointed (on the inside) that a few family members didn’t come to the party. I remember choosing to feel grateful for all the people that did come, as well as all the friends on FB that wrote to me. It turned out to be a fun time and even my husband commented on my great attitude. The thing is, I wasn’t fake at all. I’m not good at fake, but I am getting good at choosing to be happy, grateful, curious and at peace.

  7. I skipped a meal. That may seem simple, but I’m a BIG fan of food and look forward to every bite, and then some. Overeating has been a recent challenge of mind so fasting lunch today gave me a wonderful sense of progress towards building a healthier relationship with food.
