Hey Gia, I have been trying to properly meditate for years, but I feel like I am doing it wrong. (Hear me out!) I have a sleeping disorder (idiopathic hypersomnia) and PTSD. I always explain my disorder by saying, “You know that groggy feeling when you first wake up? That drunk sleepy state? This is called sleep inertia, and I basically always in a state of ‘asleep’. ” This disorder can cause “wakeful dreams” where I am in a dream state while completely awake. So, how I feel that I am meditating “wrong” is that meditation causes me to fall asleep. If I meditate at night to bring my anxiety down, there is no waking me. (I did once meditate myself into a sleep that lasted 32 hours until a concerned friend came to my house and had to forcibly wake me.) I feel much more relaxed after my meditation “trance” sleep, but I don’t know how to go so far in that I pass out. And this pass out can happen within a matter of a minute or so. I stand up and applaud! Mindfulness and meditation works whether you are a Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, or any other type of religion/non-religion. As a Christian, I benefit from Buddhist teachings, too. I may reshape some of the words and practices a little to conform to my own beliefs, but mindfulness has really turned my life around so that I am a healthier, happier, and fruitful as I work with other living beings practicing radical self-care and other-being care.
