My mother, my friend, my graduate professor…these are just a few of the very strong, intelligent, kind, gentle women in my life who have been my mentors (and some still are!). I have not written anything yet to anyone (and my biggest mentor, my mother, has passed away) but I would tell them thank you for seeing what you see in me, the goodness, intelligence, strength, kindness. Thank you for believing in me when I didnโt believe in me. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction when I was lost or confused or just pissed off. Thank you for always loving me, even at my worst.
I think too another huge mentor in my life is my 8 yo son. Daily he challenges me, but if I allow it, he will make me a way better version of myself.
My mom has shown me that life is fraught with ups and downs, highs and lows. While we don’t see eye to eye on many things, her steadfast belief in never giving up has made me a more resilient person myself today. She also taught me to be myself and believe in myself, something she often gets frustrated by…because my version of who I am is not necessarily the version she wants me to be! However, I can smile about it now, because when I am at my best, I am happy. And I know she wants me to be happy.
I have had tons of mentors that have come into and out of my life throughout the years. My parents are definitely my first two mentors. Thanks to them, I have a solid belief system and core values that make me the person I am. They have inspired, supported and motivated me my whole life, with every decision, no matter how crazy it was. They helped me get the education I have and did their best to send me abroad to work when I was young, and even supported my decision to move to another country and experience life a different way. They are the most amazing people and I would not be who I am without all their love.
My Mom is someone i disrespect too often because of my irritability that has proved to be hard to control. She constantly shows everyone around her unconditional love and gentleness. I want to be the same way and by being very conscious of my actions and being patient and kind, i can get there!
I have been lucky to have a number of mentors. They have encouraged me to pursue career options I would not have otherwise thought myself worthy of, including my current position.
Darla Richardson, my former supervisor at CWJC, has seen me go thru one thing after another the past four years. She watched me go from a student in the program to a volunteer to an employee to a former employee. She watched me fall flat on my face in a very public way (or so it seemed at the time). She helped me learn the difference between unconditional love and self-destructive emotional martyrdom. She knew when to let go and when to let God, thus helping me learn the importance of boundaries. Now things appear to be falling into place for me, and I can hardly wait to tell her all about it next week!
