I am present

Day 1 – PRESENT

The first step in living mindfully is to settle back into the present moment and quiet the mind of its constant chatter. From this place of peaceful presence, we have an amazing opportunity to live with more intention and awareness. But first, we must become very clear.

  1. When my mind is wandering, I am usually caught up in thoughts of self judgment. I criticize all the ways that I am not good enough, all the things I should do, or should have done, all the ways I haven’t been perfect enough.

I also spend a lot of time catastrophizing. It’s hard for me to believe that things will work out for me, so my mind spends a lot of time deciding on all the things that could and will go wrong.

The other thing I tend to focus on is all the things that don’t seem fair. I go through lists in my mind of things that I don’t believe have worked out, and then I obsess over how they could have gone wrong.

  2. Instead of focusing on the now, I’m thinking about my failures. I’m thinking how I haven’t lived up to expectations and the people I have disappointed. I’m thinking about my inadequacies. I’m thinking about the things I wish I had and not being grateful for the things I already been given, own, or have achieved.

  3. When my mind wanders it usually heads to some kind of inner conflict I am having. When I find myself peaceful and calm my thoughts tend to want to rile things up, the calm and inner silence is a daily struggle to become comfortable with.
