The Artist's Way

The Artist’s Way

Julia Cameron's spiritual path to higher creativity, reimagined into short daily sessions.

The Artist's Way is a journey of discovery. You are the terra incognita (unexplored territory) that you will be exploring. Expect to fall in love with both yourself and the world around you.

The Artist's Way is a distillate from forty years of Julia Cameron's artistic practice intended to teach people to process and transform life through acts of creativity.

The Artist’s Way “helps de-mystify the creative process by making it part of your daily life. It tackles your self-doubts, self-criticism and worries about time, money and the support to pursue our creative dream. It has already helped thousands of people to uncover their hidden talents – it can help you, too.

Today's Intention

What to Expect

Many of us sense we are more creative, but unable to efficiently tap that creativity. While there is no quick fix for instant, pain-free creativity … creative recovery (or discovery) is a teachable, trackable spiritual process.

When we engage in a creative recovery, we enter into a withdrawal process from life as we know it. Withdrawal is another way of saying detachment or non-attachment, which is emblematic of consistent work with any meditation practice. We ourselves are the substance we withdraw to not from as we pour our overextended and missed placed creative energy back into our own core.

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us.

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

As you learn to recognize, nurture, and protect your inner artist, you will be able to move beyond pain and creative construction. You will learn ways to recognize and resolve fear, remove emotional scar tissue, and strengthen your confidence. Damaging all ideas about creativity will be explored and discarded. You will experience an intensive, guided encounter with your own creativity — your private villains, champions, wishes, fears, dreams, hopes, and triumphs. The experience will make you excited, depressed, angry, afraid, joyous, hopeful, and, ultimately, more free.

Today's Intention

Meet the facilitator: Matt Prindle

As an Artist’s Way facilitator I, Matt, endeavor to support, encourage, and hold a space built of trust, care, heartfelt connection, and humility.

In gathering together, “we can act as mirrors to potentiate each other's growth” (The Artist’s Way, pg. 207).

In this way, we are compelled to bring our best selves to this space.

The Artist’s Way offers the following ‘Sacred Circle Rules‘ (p. 210) which we explore throughout the journey:

  1. Creativity flourishes in a place of safety and acceptance.
  2. Creativity grows among friends, withers among enemies.
  3. All creative ideas are children who deserve our protection.
  4. All creative success requires creative failure.
  5. Fulfilling our creativity is a sacred trust.
  6. Violating someone’s creativity violates a sacred trust.
  7. Creative feedback must support the creative child, never shame it.
  8. Creative feedback must build on strengths never focus on weaknesses.
  9. Success occurs in clusters and is born in generosity.
  10. The good of another can never block our own.

Time Commitment

Julia Cameron recommends making a time commitment of about 7 to 10 hours a week—an hour a day, or slightly more if you choose. This modest commitment to using the tools can yield tremendous results within the 12 weeks of this course.

As I've journeyed through the material myself, I have created a condensed 10-minute daily session in our standard Intention Inspired format throughout the 12 weeks for those who can't commit to anything longer.
