AWARENESS 💡 Uncovering the Hidden Impact of Clutter


Today, let’s bring awareness to the stuff that clutters our environment and how it really affects us so we can let go of attachments to the past and anxiety for the future.

We know that accumulating clutter is much more than a physical struggle. The act of holding on to things (physical and mental) is actually an instinctive reflex to distract us from the heart of deeper issues we’re ignoring.

The process of decluttering is actually quite simple, it’s the deeper reality of our attachments to the past or anxiety for the future that takes away from experiencing inspiration in the present moment from a clutter-free home.

One may experience moments of fear and doubt when thinking about purging their belongings. But one mustn't fret, because as long as the choice is to keep items that inspire, what will be left will be all the amount one needs.

Hold the vision, trust the process.

The process of facing and selecting our possessions can be quite scary and sometimes even painful. It forces us to confront our shortcomings and the issues we’ve dealt with in the past.


I am mindful of my surroundings.

I know what inspires me.

I release what doesn't serve me.

I let go of past attachments.

I create my desired lifestyle.

I feel less stress and anxiety.

I embrace the present moment.

I am resourceful and enthusiastic.


The Treasure Hunt of Self-Reflection

Prepare to embark on a thrilling adventure to rediscover the treasures hidden in your very own environment. As we prepare for the Great Purge, we challenge ourselves to delve deeper into the heart of our personal space and uncover the stories and emotions that lie within.

  1. Set a timer for 5 minutes.
  2. Explore the environment you're in right now as if you were an archaeologist discovering a long-lost civilization.
  3. As you find each “artifact,” ponder its origins, the emotions it evokes, and the role it has played (or could play) in your life.
  4. Snap a photo or jot down a few words to capture the essence of each artifact.

Beware: This adventure may lead to unexpected feelings, insights, or even laughter. Sail on, brave explorer, and may the winds of self-discovery guide you on your journey!

Our possessions very accurately relate to the history of the decisions we have made in life.

Tidying is a way of taking stock that shows us what we’re really like.

This reveals that the question of what we want to own is actually the question of how we want to live our life.


By acknowledging our attachment to the past and our fears for the future by honestly looking at our possessions, we will be able to see what is really important to us.

Draw a big Venn diagram in your journal and label each circle as:

  • An attachment to the past
  • Anxiety about the future

Then outside of those circles create another label that says

  • Inspiration
Attachment? Anxiety? Or Inspiration!?

Now as you look around your space, focus on one object at a time and record how each object makes you feel.

It’s important to understand what kind of things you tend to own because it’s a mirror for the values and principles that shape your life.

After you’ve had your fill, reflect on your list to see where your priorities have been. Are they accurate with the kind lifestyle you want to live?

This process helps us identify our values and reduce doubt and confusion while making life decisions.

In Marie Kondo's words, “Attachment to the past and fears concerning the future not only govern the way you select the things you own but also represent the criteria by which you make choices in every aspect of your life, including your relationships with people and your job” (Maria Kondo, 2019.
